On October 9th 2010, the Guatemalan Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance declared that the second week in October each year be dedicated to mental health awareness. This represents a significant achievement for team leader, Victor Lopez and the Guatemalan TGH team whose activities have contributed to promoting mental health in the country. Through its declaration, the state ensures health and welfare of all its inhabitants by developing prevention, promotion, recovery, rehabilitation, and complementary programs of mental health at the individual, family and community level to procure the most complete physical, mental and social health of its population.

During the first weeks in November 2010, the Canadian TGH team was back in Peru to train a group of interviewers who will begin fieldwork in January 2011. The study will focus on individuals who were exposed to political violence between the 1980’s and 2000. The 93 individuals who were surveyed in 2000, and reported symptoms compatible with a diagnosis of PTSD, will be traced and re-contacted to understand the long-term implications of organized and interpersonal violence on mental health and well-being of indigenous peoples in these highland regions.
